Cub Scouts FAQs

These are some of the most common questions asked about Cub Scouts and our pack. If you have any questions not addressed here, please feel free to reach out.

When and where do you meet?

As a Pack, we typically meet once a month on the third Monday of the month at Cole Canyon Elementary School. We also have monthly events where we meet. Be sure to check out our calendar here.

How is Cub Scouts organized?

Cub Scouts are organized into a "pack" that includes both boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade. Within the pack, members are divided into smaller groups called dens, where children of the same grade level can participate in activities together and move up to the next rank.

How old are the Scouts?

Kids can join as young as 5-years-old as a Kindergarten Lion and as old as 11-years-old as a 5th grader Arrow of Light. Kids can join at any time of the year, and are not required to earn that year’s rank to move on with their group the next year.

What do the dens do?

Dens are organized by grade level and complete activities within their den to earn a rank.

Lions- Kindergarten

Tigers- 1st grade

Wolf- 2nd grade

Bear- 3rd grade

Webelos I- 4th grade

Webelos II/Arrow of Light- 5th grade

How much does it cost?

We believe that Scouting offers exceptional value compared to many sports and activities. Our costs include a national membership fee of $85, along with pack dues of $70. Additionally, Cub Scouts can subscribe to Scout Life magazine for just $15 per year. Uniform costs vary, and each grade level has a specific handbook priced at approximately $24 for the year. Activity fees for campouts, day camps, and field trips may vary, but we strive to keep them affordable for all families and provide fundraisers throughout the year to help offset some costs. Please see our “Resources” guide for a more detailed cost estimate.

What is the time commitment?

Joining scouting involves a moderate time commitment that fosters community and engagement. The Pack meets as a whole once a month, while each den typically gathers one to two times per month. If a scout is unable to attend the den meetings, they might have some “homework” if they want to advance to the next rank (however, this is not necessary to move along with friends). Additionally, there are optional pack events, such as campouts and service projects, occurring one to two times a month. Each family is encouraged to contribute their time and skills, including attending a monthly parent committee meeting, as it takes a collective effort to create a quality and enjoyable program for our scouts.
